What is a NAS?

A NAS, or Network Attached Storage, is defined as a storage device connected to a network that allows for centralized data storage and retrieval. This means that multiple users and devices can access and share files from a single source within a network, which facilitates collaboration and data management. The architecture of a NAS typically includes one or more hard drives, which are configured to work together to provide scalable storage capacity. The centralized nature of NAS systems simplifies data management as it eliminates the need for multiple copies of files stored on different devices.

By contrast, other options do not accurately capture the full scope of what a NAS represents. A type of computer managing storage devices refers to servers, which can include NAS but doesn't define it specifically. A protocol for transferring files over the internet points towards FTP or HTTP, which are not descriptions of storage devices. Lastly, a backup solution for personal computers describes a specific use-case of storage but does not encompass the broader functionality and purpose of a NAS, which supports all network users rather than just providing backup services.
